About American Legion "Lillian Larson" Post 114
American Legion Greenwood Post 114 (Lillian Larson Post) is a chartered post of The American Legion located in Greenwood, Michigan, serving veterans and the community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
National Context
The American Legion was founded in 1919 by veterans of World War I returning from the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. Chartered by Congress, it quickly became the nation’s largest veterans service organization, focused on service to veterans, service members, and their families through advocacy, rehabilitation, youth programs, and community support.
History of Post 114
Greenwood Post 114 was chartered in 1979 (celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2019 alongside the Legion’s centennial). It is uniquely named after Lillian Larson, a World War I Army Nurse — believed to be the only American Legion post named after a female WWI veteran.
The post serves the Ishpeming and greater Marquette County area in the rural, forested Upper Peninsula. It actively supports veterans through regular meals for residents of the Jacobetti Veterans Home, annual fishing trips, community picnics benefiting the UP Honor Flight, flag retirement ceremonies, 9/11 remembrances, Memorial Day events, and other patriotic observances.
Post 114 hosts the Legion Riders chapter, Auxiliary Unit, and Sons of The American Legion Squadron, forming a full Legion Family presence in the region. It remains a hub for veteran camaraderie, fundraising, and service “in the spirit of God and country” across the vast UP landscape.
Today, Greenwood Post 114 continues its mission of veterans serving veterans while strengthening community ties in Greenwood, Ishpeming and beyond.
